Why???

Thursday, July 19th, 2012

My mother had said to me hundreds of times, “Everything happens for the best.” Almost a year after I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s sitting in her living room having casual conversation, her favorite commentary changed. “Well, remember John, everything happens for a reason.” What had always been the “best” was now a mediocre “reason”, solemn and unexplainable “reason”? When I confronted her about it, she reluctantly explained, “I can’t imagine that your Parkinson’s Disease is for the best.” I felt a sudden rush. I didn’t know it then, but I had been looking for something to inspire me. Right then and there I made the decision to give her optimistic “best” back. Somehow, some way, I would make my having Parkinson’s “for the best.” The fog and denial that I had been living in started to lift. I felt a purpose. That’s why I wrote this book. I was a successful student and professional. The same principles and steps I used to develop my life then applies equally to living life to the fullest after a life-changing event. Your own medical condition or one of a loved one, personal loss, change in your job or even relationship situation can suddenly stop you in your tracks and change the your life as you had known it to be. It does not have to break you. You can make it “for the best”.

If you think that being diagnosed with Parkinson’s is the best thing that happened to me. The answer is no. Having unlimited amount of money, traveling the world first class, having and occasional dinner with my favorite Red Sox player, Carl Yastrzemski, that could be the best thing that could happen to me. But you could ask how can anyone be so upbeat? Be so optimistic? Knowing they have an incurable, progressive, neurologic, debilitating disease? At 41 years young?” Is it possible for someone to have had a “so called” great life with a successful career in the field that he loves, in a life style that he loves, suddenly taken away from him. Yet remain uninterrupted. Strong. Happy. Almost superhuman. That answer is a definite “yes,” but most of the time. Sometimes I get sad. I am pissed off at times. I sometimes feel scared. I know what the long-term looks like. I have seen people diagnosed with Parkinson’s “not doing so well.” It would be a lie if I said I didn’t put myself in those shoes for a millisecond. At times, I need to lean on my Bernadette. Reminding myself to “Let go and let God.” I have to force myself to bring my focus back to what is now and follow my “life purpose.” Then I can be the person you see in my inspirational talks. The voice you hear when you read my book, DECIDE SUCCESS: You Ain’t Dead Yet. The person you talk to one-on-one and look to for hope. The enthusiastic, passionate and inspirational person who is John Baumann. It’s through pain and fear that builds a warrior. That’s why you fight. There is not a person throughout history that made a difference who did not have to fight. I see the fear in the eyes of the people in my audiences. They want to fight, but need guidance to find their mission. They find peace in my words of hope. I am determined to make my Parkinson’s “for the best” and I will succeed. Make the decision. DECIDE SUCCESS. I live the title of my book. And, by the way, I ain’t dead yet.

DECIDE SUCCESS is not just another inspirational storybook or a self-help book loaded with clichés. It uses short stories to bring the success principles to life, engaging imagery. I have dedicated my life to inspiring, explaining my twelve action steps to achieve the success you truly desire to, and bringing hope to as many people as possible.

Parkinson’s Superstar Nomination

Thursday, April 12th, 2012

John Baumann from Louisville, KY
Nominated by Irene Litvan

My Parkinson’s Superstar has to be John Baumann, one of my favorite patients. Diagnosed in 2002 at the age of 41, John worked 6 more years as an executive officer of a major corporation before dedicating his life, on a full-time basis, to making a difference in the Parkinson’s community.

John has inspired those with Parkinson’s to live their lives to the fullest, family care partners to realize what a difference they make and how much they are appreciated, and professional healthcare providers to maintain their passion and commitment to the cause. John has traveled far and wide as keynote speaker at symposiums to bring his message of hope and positive perspective (Reclaiming Posi-spective) including, among other locations, Cincinnati at the Sunflower Revolution, Indianapolis before a Pacers game, Houston, Birmingham, Saskatchewan in Canada, St. Thomas of the Virgin Islands and even his hometown of Louisville.

John has also written a book providing a template for others to live life to the fullest with Parkinson’s Disease, Decide Success (Twelve Action Steps) – You Ain’t Dead Yet (available at Amazon.com). John has contributed to two other books (The Peripatetic Pursuit of Parkinson’s Disease and Courageous Stories of Inspiration), is a graduate of the PDF clinical trail advocate institute and is on the faculty of the University of Louisville. John is also Chair of the Make-A-Wish Foundation Board in Kentucky and has cherished being care partner to his daughter (who has flourished despite being born with life threatening birth defects and cerebral palsy).

Decide Success: Attitude

Parkinson’s Love Story

Thursday, February 16th, 2012

Unbelievable story. I thought no one would enter into a long-term relationship with me in light of my Parkinsons and the prospect of being a care partner for me. I was wrong. Met an angel who fell in love with me and is a personal trainer and nutritionalist to boot. I found my one and only.

Met on January 7 in the Virgin Islands. GETTING MARRIED FEBRUARY 26!!!

I was diagnosed with Parkinsons ten years ago at the age of 41. Fortunately, I have had a very slow progression, but that could change at any time.

I started with match about 4 months and had been on dates with several quality woman, but none that sparked with me. I decided to go to the Virgin Islands to meet up with old friends that were there for a conference.

I casually invited my brother who surprised me by accepting. My father got wind of the trip and invited himself. Needless to say the prospect of having 21 consecutive meals with my father and brother was a little daunting.

Two days before the trip, I did a match search of the Virgin Islands with the intention of just enjoying a nice meal and obtaining information on the islands. I got much more than I ever could have imagined.

My flight there left Kentucky at 6am so I had to be up by 4am. Upon arrival in St. Thomas, I touched base with one of my match connections and we made plans five hours later for her to take the ferry from St. John to the Red Hook terminal in St. Thomas. On the trip from the airport, the taxi driver locked his keys in the car with my luggage and phone! I had no way of touching base with her and had to wear the same clothes that I traveled in all day.

I found out that the taxi ride to Red Hook was $20 each way. With no way for us to communicate, I had no idea if she would show up. She had to pay $12 to take the ferry with no confirmation that I would be there.

When she walked off the boat. She took my breathe away. My only though was, “I have found my future, my one and only.” We spent most of the next week together. I left on January 14. Moved her to Louisville on January 31 and will marry her on February 26. Thanks Match.com

Maria Kassova • John, I only just saw your video …

http://ucgardnercenter.com/video/john-baumannYou Ain\'t Dead Yet

…and I am so moved and touched. I currently write a book on confidence and one of the key premises of being confident is choosing the positive perspective. My heart was filled with respect and admiration for your positivity, huge inner power AND sincerity. I agree that at the time ‘disaster’ strikes (we don’t call it that after, but it feels like it at first) it is hard to be cheerful and find the flip side. Yet our attitude towards life then takes over – and we make the choice. As you have done – ‘you ain’t dead yet, let’s to the best of the time I’ve got. Sky diving, inspiring others, write another book, spend time with my loved ones…Seeing your video is one of my Christmas discoveries / gifts. I will be showing your clips in my confidence workshops….so your legacy and inspiration is spread over in Singapore and other parts of the world. May 2012 bring you a new lease of energy, ideas and desire to keep going and touching the hearts and souls of your family, friends and thousands of other people throughout the world…sending you a big virtual hug from Singapore.

Here is what others have said about John Baumann and his book:

John Y. Brown Jr., 55th Governor of Kentucky, former Owner of the Boston Celtics and successful businessman: “John Baumann has used his life as an example and inspiration for others to follow. Decide Success offers wisdom and confidence on how to make the most out of your life and find happiness and fulfillment every step of the way. After you read it, you will say: “What a book! What a life!” Good luck John. You’re a good man and have a great message.”

Amy McNeil, SARC Executive Director: “Your personal stories of growth and optimism struck a deep cord with those in attendance. If motivation was your only goal, you succeeded. However, if you were striving to inspire deep belly laughter, internal reflection, misty eyes, and a healthy dose of “open your eyes to the world that surrounds” as they say in Hollywood, you nailed it! Your engaging presentation left all conference-goers thinking about how to embrace and savour life. Conference evaluations only confirmed how I felt: ”Wow. Loved John Baumann as keynote speaker!!” “Such a motivated speaker. I will think of him and his life challenges when I am feeling down myself. I know I will not feel that way much longer.” “Wonderful presenter! Touching, funny, inspirational!” “John Baumann was excellent. I didn’t want the presentation to end. What a ‘Grand Finale’!” “Amazing!” Quality presenters are difficult to find, so I hope you don’t object to me recommending you to fellow colleagues.”

GJ Hart, Chief Executive Officer of California Pizza Kitchen and former CEO of Texas Roadhouse: “What an amazing book. As John says in the book, “Don’t give yourself a choice. Turn off the doubting Thomas in you. Silence the negative voice in your head” and read this book today. The best thing you can do for your personal and professional development is to read this book. So decide for yourself to succeed and read John’s book.”

Matthew Hamel, Executive Vice-President, Brown-Forman Corporation: “John Baumann has taken on the biggest questions any of us can face (What do I want out of my life? How can I achieve it?) and described twelve specific, concrete steps that will lead each of us to the answers. These answers will, of course, be different for every reader, but John demonstrates that the process by which we arrive at them is not. John’s method requires each of us to be honest with ourselves – even uncomfortably so. This is the hard part, but John leads by example, sharing his own journey with a disarming frankness. As big as the issues are that John urges us to wrestle with, he makes them manageable and even fun with his down-to-earth style. Reading this book, you will get the sense that you are chatting with a wise friend, which makes the challenge he lays down for us seem all the more possible. Read this book with pen in hand; you will want to highlight the many nuggets of wisdom and return to them often as you work John’s method to conquer the world, or at least your corner of it.″
Shahin Shoostari, PhD, Fellow Conference Speaker: “I am just writing to tell you your talk has changed me, …I came out of your talk a much stronger person…a much stronger caregiver….you are a great speaker John….with your positive attitude, and the great ability which you have to express your feelings, your opinions, and telling people your life story and your daughter, Katie’s story, you could CHANGE lives…. I don’t know how to express myself about the impact of your story on me John…..I was listening, I remember I cried, I laughed, I felt sad, and then happy….but at the end BEING STRONG, a much stronger person….as you were taking I was reflecting on my own life, on my own challenges….I found myself coming out of that session being a much stronger person….I am writing John, just to thank you for sharing your own story, and telling us how important it is to keep the positive attitude, but also take the time to rest and enjoy our lives and what we have. Your talk was fascinating, inspiring, relevant, practical…I was able to relate to what you were saying, even without having your challenges… I believe your talk would be good for everyone of us, for everybody regardless of the kinds of the problems and issues which we have……Being positive, being strong, enjoying life, helping others… I hope you continue telling people all about your life, and what has helped you to become who you are today………

Chris Campbell, Senior Vice-President, YUM Brands: “John – I just finished reading your book, and thought it was awesome. It is extremely well written, and filled with practical and useable advice supported by entertaining real life examples. The book is uplifting, energetic, enriching and inspirational. It provides a clear, common sense roadmap to improvement and success on all levels – professional and personal.”

T. Vernon Foster, Director, University of Louisville Business Solutions: “I have been reading your book and I love the vision and passion you convey to your audience. There is much for the reader to learn and digest. The value is understanding the basic rules of engagement and to better one’s outcome if they seize on your basic principles. I agree Thank you for sharing your personal journey in life with me.″

Debra Hoffer, President, Junior Achievement of Kentuckiana: ″John Baumann’s passion for self-realization is contagious. Go ahead. Read this book and be everything you can be.″

Pamela Kell, Parkinsons Creative Collective: “In his book, Decide Success: You Ain’t Dead Yet, John Baumann has written a terrific guide to living deliberately. Intended to inspire people with Parkinson Disease to move forward and forego the temptation to think their life is over, through humor, personal experience and touching revelation he presents a methodology for success in dealing with chronic disease. His common sense analysis of the steps necessary to turn tragedy into opportunity and the methods to implement those steps, applies to anyone who is in need of direction and focus. I wonder how much more successful all our lives would be had we developed these habits as young people? It is good to know there’s still time because ‘We ain’t dead yet!’”

Kathleen Crist, Executive Director, Houston Area Parkinsons Society: John: How do I thank you – let me count the ways …. you came, you thrilled, you brought people to tears, you brought people to laughter, but, most importantly, you inspired. Thank you.
